Abstract

In the state of Veracruz, traditional dances rooted in Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and mestizo cultures are not only cultural expressions but also vehicles of historical memory, collective identity, and symbolic resistance. Practices such as the dances of the huehues, matachines, dengue, negritos, and the voladores of Papantla reflect deep social dynamics shaping community life. This paper explores how these dances contribute to the reproduction of power and gender structures, with a particular focus on the historical exclusion of women from ritual participation. The case of the voladores and the Matachines rituals stands out as a significant example, where female participation has been systematically denied, underscoring the persistence of patriarchal hierarchies within ceremonial traditions, compared to other regional folk dances, where women can participate.
